A rare oarfish was discovered Sunday in the waters of Toyon bay, about two miles from Avalon on Catalina Island.
The 18-foot-long sea creature was dead but still intact when pulled ashore by marine science instructor Jasmine Santana. Instructors and students at the Catalina Island Marine Institute were amazed at the find, calling it the “discovery of a lifetime.”
The oarfish can grow to more than 50 feet long, the longest bony fish in the world, but it is a deepwater fish and it’s very rare to see one so close to shore.
Now staffers at the marine institute are trying to decide what to do with the carcass, which takes 15 to 20 people just to pick it up.
The program has been in touch with UC Santa Barbara and the Museum of Natural History to see if anyone wants to display it.
But as they can’t even fit the fish in a freezer, the scientists may just decide to bury the carcass and let it decompose under the sand.
